The Full Report
Lemei Rock is the highest point in the Indian Heaven Wilderness area. It offers great views Helens, Rainer, and Adams if the weather is right. I decided to take a trip to have some fun in the early season snow.
Be advised: the route through Carson up the Winder River Hwy is now closed for the winter season. You have to go our to Hood River and up the 141 in Washington to access this area.
I classified this hike as moderate if you attempt to summit the actual rock which is a challenge and will depend heavily on current snow conditions. The trail itself to the rock is a gradual climb for the first half and then is relatively level for the second half. I also said no to kids and pets if you wish to try and summit the rock.
If you do not summit then this is an easier hike with a couple of opportunistic viewpoints (weather dependent) and a few alpine lakes (surely frozen but still gorgeous) to gaze upon. This would be a good snowshoe day adventure in a more remote place but still close to Portland.
