Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone!!!!
Roughly 2.5 hours from Portland, Oregon and nothing but sunshine and beautiful water crossings once you reach the lower portion of the Puget Sound. Horseshoe Lake Golf Course is located in Gig Harbor, Washington on the western edge of the Puget Sound. I arrived at the course Saturday morning and things were really moving. When 235 competitors, across several divisions, are teeing off on the course, using the practice range and greens, there is little quiet time. Luckily, I had my teammates - Craig Nielsen, Dan Carpenter & Jason Pinkal - to keep me company during the 3 hour wait for my 2:10pm tee time.
The Kitsap Classic course at Horseshoe Lake measures up at ~12565’, 27 holes and a gnarly par 94. Playing this course requires quite a bit of personal fortitude and attention to course detail. Horseshoe Lake DGC houses a plethora of undulating terrain, massive wooded ridge lines, shrouded putting greens, and plenty of wind. Holes range from 285’ to 1020’ giving plenty of opportunities for agonizing mistakes and grand triumphs.
Two days of 68 and 75 degrees, low to medium winds amazing sunshine made for a fabulous event. Sam Huff, the tournament director, ran a smooth and well-polished event, and major kudos go out to all of the participants and event staff who made this course what it has become over the last 4 years. Thank you, everyone.
As this adventure comes to a close, surely there is another great experience just around the corner.
