Southern California Bouldering

Southern California Bouldering

Last week Nolan and I took a week to visit our brother in San Diego. While there, we figured we check out some of the local Californian Granite. Woodson Mountain was a half hour drive out of town and the Tramway was about a 2 hour drive North (totally worth it).
Always gotta be careful in a area with snakes
Mt. Woodson is completely littered with boulders. However, lacking a guidebook we found it pretty difficult to get from one place to the next. It was pretty scary at times since we were doing a bit of bushwhacking in rattle snake country. We were sure to make plenty of noise to let them know of our presence. This area has plenty of potential- huge boulders with vertical face climbing, some steeper terrain and plenty of cracks. Unfortunately, Nolan and I were there in the middle of the day, completely exposed to the sun. Climbing was hard, but it was cool to explore a new area. Micah Bishop exploring Mt. Luckily our car didn't overheat and we were able to ride the Tramway over 8 thousand feet up to the top of the state park wilderness where it was a brisk 70 degrees; perfect for climbing. This area is sick; granite boulders everywhere with very mild approaches.

Views from the ride on the Tramway
Our day started climbing anything we could find, moving from near the ranger station up through the Flash Gordon area and all the way to the Cube Boulder. It was rounded off when temps were perfect with a quick evening session at the Smiley Boulder. The high altitude and the variation of steep and tall rock makes Tramway one of the best spots in Southern California. Tramway's climbing really is top notch and it was a satisfying way to end our trip. Definitly a spot I'd be eager to return to.
