Gear Review: Werner Algonquin Carbon Canoe Paddle

With their Ultimate, full carbon construction it is exceptionally light and exceptionally stiff. This paddle may be overkill for the casual paddler but in the right situation, the Algonquin can be a real blessing. Everything about this paddle helps it perform well during long days and weeks of paddling where the wear and tear on our bodies from each paddle stroke can really add up. It moves through the water and air effortlessly and efficiently. The relatively smaller blade size means less strain from each stroke while still allowing us to keep a high cadence. Beyond its lightweight materials, the Algonquin's blade is positively buoyant which aids in lifting the blade out of the water and bracing. I have always appreciated the classic beauty and feel of wood paddles. This is what I grew up with and always sort of scoffed at the idea of the fancy modern ultralight paddles out there. While I do still really like my wooden bent shafts. After using the Algonquin for a couple of days I could really tell the difference in how I felt at the end of the day. This can really add up over a long trip and I can really see it make a big difference. The Good: Super light weight and efficient construction. The Bad: The adjustable T-grip option is nice and well built if you need the flexibility but it adds weight and changes the balance of the paddle. I would stick with the one piece option and it saves a bit of money too. The Bottom Line: This is a very nice paddle that is at home on long days and trips moving loaded boats. While it may be overkill for the more casual outing it's a paddle that will not disappoint and leaves you feeling good even after a full day in the canoe.
